Loughborough Retreat
Welcome to our home. We enjoy the opportunity to share this beautiful little corner of the world with new friends. Living in the country requires a few special considerations that may not be a part of your normal routine.
Bathroom: We have a septic system that works very well when it is not overloaded. Human waste & toilet paper (use sparingly) are the only things that should be flushed away. Please wrap sanitary napkins or wet naps in toilet paper, put that in a paper bag & dispose of them with regular garbage. “Wet Naps” will clog the sewage pump. This will cause a sewage backup and it will take a day or two to have it replaced by a plumber. There is a sewage pump in the cellar that you may hear from time to time. Please keep your showers as brief as reasonable. Because the bathroom is small, condensation accumulates quickly during showers. Please turn on the exhaust fan before showering. Make sure the shower door is closed tightly. After your shower, turn on the dehumidifier, turn off the exhaust fan & close the bathroom door. The bathroom should dry quickly.
Laundry: The washer/dryer is located in the hallway closet. Please use the laundry & dryer after 7 pm to take advantage of lower electricity rates. There is also a clothes line outside for laundry or wet beach towels. There are extra pillows & towels in the laundry & bedroom closets.
Kitchen: Please do not put bacon grease, butter or other oils in the sink. It plugs up our septic tank. Keep it in an empty can or other container, cool it in the fridge or freezer & we will pick it up Monday evening with regular garbage. We recycle plastic, cans & glass in the blue or grey box outside your door. We keep paper & cardboard on your deck to keep it dry for bon fires. Garbage & recycle pick up is Tuesdays at 6:00 am. We will collect everything Monday night. Please do not leave garbage bags outside or the animals will tear them apart overnight.
We also compost vegetable, fruit, egg shells & coffee grounds etc. The compost pit is in the bushes to the east of your side door. Absolutely no meat, fish or bones are allowed in order to keep the wild animals away. Vegetable waste can be fed to the chickens if you wish.
Barbeque: There is a propane barbeque & extra tank under the deck. Please move unit away from combustibles before use. Utensils are in the kitchen drawer to the right of the dishwasher.
Smoking: There is no smoking in the residence. You may smoke outside if you wish.
Water: Our well has great water but it must be conserved during hot dry summers. Please keep showers as brief as possible. The cold water from the kitchen tap is the best to drink. All other inside water has run through our softener. Some lake residents use lake water for drinking & household use. Please don’t shampoo or soil in the lake.
Visitors: Tents and campers are prohibited in order to prevent overcrowding on the property and its infrastructure. However, if your children want to pitch a tent for their use, that is OK.
Swimming: There is a sand beach with shallow water on the property. We recommend the use of water shoes due to the influx of zebra mussels in the past decade.
Telephone: Our phone upstairs is – (613) 353-2751. Sandy @ work – (613) 329-9796.
Supplies: We have attempted to leave condiments & cleaning supplies that you may need during your stay. Please let us know if there is anything that you need. Don’t hesitate to call us.
Air Conditioning: Everyone has their own preference regarding air conditioning. Generally the unit stays cool if windows are open during the night & the windows & blinds are closed during hot & humid days. If you want the air turned on just let us know or enter the upstairs & turn on the air. The thermostat is in the hall. Press “System” button to “cool” & set temperature to 75. It is always warmer upstairs.
Check in – out: The balance of your account is due (cash preferred) upon arrival. Your accommodation runs from 5:00 pm on Friday to 10:00 am the following Friday. This leaves us a small window of time to refresh the unit for our next guests. Please take all of your food with you and leave the unit tidy. We will empty the dishwasher & wash the floors.
Entertainment: There are lots of books, movies & board games available. Feel free to look in any cupboard or drawer. Everything is available for your use. Our WI FI password is 6133532751. Our satellite reception is too slow & unreliable to stream movies but it will let you do essentials.
Food, Beer & Liquor: Beer & liquor are available in Inverary at the Home Hardware store. There is an excellent small grocery store at Glenburnie on Perth Road. They have fresh meats, vegetables & Pan Chancho bread at reasonable prices. Of course everything you need is also available in Kingston including Fort Henry, Museums, Art Galleries & a lively downtown on the waterfront.
Restaurant: Battersea is home to the Creekside Bar & Grill. This is a popular roadhouse pub for takeout or dining in. There is usually entertainment on the patio on Sundays. Watch for specials on their inside advertising. Also the Holiday Manor in Battersea is open Wednesday through Saturday from 7:00 to 11:00 am for wonderful breakfast and dinner is served Thursday (with music) through Saturday. Call Jeff at 613-353-2211 for reservations.
Boat Rentals: Loughborough Lake Marina is just north of Battersea (keep left at General Store). Fishing or Pontoon Boats are available for rent. Phone (613) 353-6205 for more information. Holiday Manor has cedar strip boats with 9.9 hp motors & kayaks for rent in Battersea. 613-353-2211
We hope that you enjoy your vacation. We are available to help in any way possible; however we also respect your privacy & will do our best to be invisible. Please let us know how we can improve your experience with us. We appreciate your comments. Recommendations to your friends & colleagues would be appreciated.
